New economic model out in February

PUTRAJAYA: A new economic model will be unveiled at the end of next February, said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

The Prime Minister said he was happy with what he has learnt and heard from the briefings about the model’s framework by National Economic Advisory Council chairman Tan Sri Amirsham A. Aziz.

“Now that the framework is completed, the next step is to get the narrative for the model ready and I am told that it will take about a month to be prepared.

“Once it is ready, it will be tabled to the Cabinet. When Cabinet has approved it, we will unveil it to the public and the target date for this is at the end of February next year,” he said Tuesday night at the Finance Ministry’s media night.

Also present were Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah and senior editors.

Najib, who is also Finance Minister, said that apart from the soon-to-be unveiled new economic model, the Government’s main agenda next year would also include the Government Transformation Programme and the Budget 2010.

“With everything in place, we hope to show to the rakyat (people) that we are committed to taking the country to new heights and success,” he said.

Najib said the Government would also ensure that all financial and fiscal policies planned for next year would be implemented without hitches.

He added that allocations and incentives that had been prepared to boost the economy would also take off as planned.

“This is because we want to ensure that next year will be the year of economic recovery for Malaysia. We want to see the economy move from contraction to growth,” he said.

Najib said the Key Performance Indicators and the National Key Result Areas would also take off as planned as they would play a role in both nation-building and economic growth.

“The rakyat has placed high expectation and aspiration on the Government and we do not intend to disappoint them,” he said.

Najib said the media could play a role in helping the Government spread its message to the people.

He said articles on these issues should be written in such a way that they were understood by the masses.

He also thanked the media for their co-operation with the ministry and Government.
